Hint: Dust off those lawn chairs and bring out the favorite picnic blanket because some of these events will have you enjoying a night under the stars!

Summer Reading Rocks at Wake County Public Libraries

From preschool to school-age kids to teens to adults your Wake County Public Library is helping families celebrate summer reading with tons of fun incentives. Visit your local branch, grab your reading logs, check out your favorite books, attend a weekly event and start rockin’ your summer reading!

Friday Family Flicks & Camping:  Captain Underpants (PG)

Friday, June 22nd.  8:45 p.m. – 10: 15 p.m.  Lake Benson Park, Garner

Free family-friendly movie outdoors! Bring your picnic dinner and lawn chairs. If you love to camp spend the night at the park with a family camp-out for a small per-family fee. (Pre-registration is required for camping.) Light concessions will also be on site. 

Discovery Table: The Longest Summer Day at Historic Yates Mill County Park

Friday, June 22nd.  8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Historic Yates Mill County Park, Raleigh

Did you know on June 21st is when we see the most hours of sunlight all year long? Celebrate the science and cultural celebrations behind this special summer day. Families can also enjoy making suncatchers. FREE for all ages. No registration required. 

Pollinator Day

Friday, June 22nd.  9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Museum of Life Sciences, Durham

It’s National Pollinator Week and families can celebrate by learning more about the pollinators in the museum gardens. Local scientists and organizations will be on site leading activities and crafts for families to learn more about the important role pollinators play in the survival of plants and people alike. (This event is included in museum admission.)

Movies by Moonlight: Despicable Me 3 (PG)

Friday, June 22nd.  Gates open at 7:00 p.m. Movie begins at 8:30 p.m.  Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Cary

Grab your favorite lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and picnic baskets and enjoy an outdoor movie with the family. Cost: $5, kids 12 years and under are free. 

Art in the Park: Incredible Insects

Saturday, June 23rd & Sunday, June 24th.  8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Historic Yates Mill County Park, Raleigh

Come learn all about bugs with fun insect-themed crafts. Learn cool bug facts and enjoy a bug scavenger hunt to observe insects in nature. Free for all ages. Adult accompaniment required.

Summer Films at NCMA:  Wonder Woman (PG-13)

Friday, June 22nd. 9:00 p.m.  Museum Park at N.C. Museum of Art, Raleigh

Big screen movie under the stars! Bring your lawn chair or picnic blanket and watch Wonder Woman (PG-13). Gates open 90 mins before the show begins. NCMA concessions will be open but you can also bring your own picnic dinner. Cost: Free for members. $6 for non-members

Storytime & Crafts at Read With Me

Saturday, June 23rd.  11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.  Read With Me: A Children’s Book & Art Shop, Raleigh

Start your weekend off with a storytime and a guided themed arts and crafts activity for ages 2 years and up. Cost: $5 (tax included) to cover art activity.

Carolina Mudcats Baseball Game

Saturday, June 23rd & Sunday, June 24th.  Five County Stadium, Zebulon

Get out and enjoy a local baseball game with the family!  Special weekend promotions for a Honky Tonk Night, Mudcats Cowboy Hat Giveaway (must be 15 years or older) and Muddy’s Buddies Kids Club Sunday are all happening this weekend. Visit their website to learn more and purchase tickets. 

Summer Nights in Spain

Saturday, June 23rd.  Gates open at 5:30 p.m.  Show begins at 7:30 p.m.  Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Cary

Classical guitar, flamenco music, flamenco dancing and so much more. Transport yourself to Spain with this special event at Koka Booth. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic baskets and make this a special night. Concessions will be open. Cost: $30 in advance. $33 day of the show. Kids 12 and under are free on the lawn. 

NCFC Soccer Match vs Louisville City FC

Saturday, June 23rd.  7:00 p.m.  WakeMed Soccer Park, Cary

Project Dance with American Dance Festival

Saturday, June 23rd.  2:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Marbles Kids Museum, Raleigh

Get out and dance with special guest dancers from the American Dance Festival. Take part in a workshop, learn some new dance moves and watch a live performance. No dance experience needed.

Summer Outdoor Music & Movie Series featuring Shana Tucker

Saturday, June 23rd.   7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.  Apex Nature Park Amphitheatre, Apex

Enjoy a free family-friendly concert under the stars. Load up the kids, the lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic dinner & show up early for good seats. Concert begins at 7:00 p.m.

Pop-Up Art: Transparencies

Sunday, June 24th.  Noon.  NC Museum of Art, Raleigh

Pop-in for free art-making activities for all ages. In partnership with the You Are Here exhibit explore how artists play with light, whether it’s bright and colorful or dark and shadowy. Contribute to a collaborative light installation and create your own see-through work of art to take home with you. This event does not require a ticket to the exhibition to attend.

International SUNday

Sunday, June 24th.  12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh

Celebrate International SUNday, the Sunday nearest to the summer solstice. Free event to learn more about our amazing star and to safely view the Sun through a solar telescope, hear about unusual space weather and current solar research, and more. 

Wake Forest Food Truck Rodeo

Sunday, June 24th.  12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Wake Forest Renaissance Centre parking lot

Food Trucks featuring savory goods to desserts, a beer tent, a Kid’s Zone and more. Bring your lawn chairs and maybe even a folding table to relax and enjoy the day.
