Do you love to shop local in and around the Raleigh area? What if we told you that you could not only shop local for those unique handmade gifts but also your purchase would be making an impact on the lives of women who live right here in the Triangle. Our friends at Designed for Joy (DFJ) have created a studio and mission that is making these things happen.
Designed for Joy (DFJ), is a local, faith-based nonprofit organization and studio showcasing home décor and jewelry pieces designed by designer Kristen Sydow and handcrafted by community artisans who participate in the organization’s program. Since the shop opened six months ago, sales proceeds have helped provide a more than 1,100 living wage hours to program participants, who eventually graduate the program with workforce skills and job references, empowering them to succeed long-term.
Located in downtown Raleigh in Boylan Heights, DFJ serves women from all across the Triangle. The organization is working to establish partnerships that reflect this broad community footprint.
Designed for Joy is celebrating 6 months of influencing change and the public is invited and welcome to attend their Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration in partnership with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.
“We are so excited to celebrate six months of influencing change right here in the Triangle,” said Cary Heise, DFJ founder and executive director. “Come celebrate with us and learn more about the bigger plan to impact our local marketplace for good.”

About Designed for Joy: Inspired by international mission work, Designed for Joy is a faith-based, local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization creating living wage artisan jobs for Triangle-area individuals who are considered high risk for sex and labor trafficking and/or vulnerable to food and housing insecurities. The organization partners with area ministries to serve those who are coming out of emergency situations, generational poverty, homelessness, rehabilitation services, or jail. The mission of Designed For Joy is for artisans to find confidence in themselves and in their faith while gaining marketable skills and a solid job reference for success in the job market.
