Top 10 Must-Haves for Postpartum Moms and Newborn Babies

MustHaves for Postpartum Moms and Newborn Babies

As I sit here with my newborn sleeping peacefully, I’ve had a moment of clarity. My husband just got back from the store in search of things to make life just a bit easier. We rummage through the bags and can’t help but think, “Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a list of the top 10 must-haves for postpartum moms and newborn babies?”

A simple list of goodies, without frills, one that gets to the heart of the issue. You have a new infant who sleeps, poops and eats. And you are recovering from the most physically intense days of your life. Surely there is a way to make things easier.

A list of must-haves for postpartum moms and newborn babies could go to 100, but these 10 items below happen to be my favorite. Whether it is your first baby or your fifth, let’s make sure you’ve got the essentials for a smooth transition when you get home. Click the images to find them on Amazon, Target and other stores.

Must-Haves for Postpartum Moms: Do It For You!

Abdominal Binder

Binders help guide the stretched out tissues in the belly back to where they belong. They give you much-needed support for your postpartum belly and lower back, whether you had a vaginal delivery or a Cesarean delivery (c-section). Before you put one on, make sure your doctor says it is ok.

Witch Hazel Pads

These are incredible soothing, cooling comfort pads. They help ease the tenderness from the stitches in the birth canal and make sitting much more comfortable. They work well when placed on top of a maxi pad lining your underwear.

Silicone Pads and Nursing Pads

I put these together because they go in the same place but work differently. Those nipples can get sore and painful, and silicone pads have a long history in soothing and helping postpartum moms heal. The silicone pads go directly on your sore nipple to ease the pain. The nursing pads go between silicone and your bra to absorb any stray milk that lets loose.

Nursing Bras

It is hard to know what your size will be, and regardless of whether you breastfeed or not, your bra size will change. Some new nursing bras can provide much needed comfort for those tender breasts. Bras with hooks on the front are great for daytime. Nursing sleep bras are perfect for nighttime feeding and comfort while sleeping.

Loose-Fitting Pants

I know, seems so simple. But listen – your pant size will change over the next few months. Having pants that are flexible with your changing body will make this transition easier. Comfort is key for postpartum moms during those first few weeks at home with your little one. And if you need to get back to work soon after, there are dressy looking options for postpartum pants as well.

Must-Haves for New Born Babies: Do It For Your Little One!

Sure you need diapers, but what kind, and what size? Small babies might use the newborn size for a month, but big babies might need a bigger size sooner. For example, I switched my son to size 2 after just a week and immediately the blowouts and leaks stopped. It’s best to have some newborn diapers on hand, but be ready to make a run for a larger size if your little one is leaking through a small diaper.

You can’t leave the hospital without one! There are so many kinds, this is a post in itself. Infant carriers allow you to unsnap the carrier from the base to transport the baby, while convertible carseats work until the baby hits a certain age, weight and height limit (around age 3 or 4 for most kids). Do your homework and find one that meets your infant’s weight requirements. Your local fire station should offer a free check that the car seat is installed correctly.

Baby Bouncer / Swing

Unless you have around-the-clock help at home, you need a secure place for when your baby is not in the crib or bassinet. Vibrating bouncers or swings are like the baby’s massage chairs. They soothe with gentle motion, and free up your hands to finally sip that cup of coffee – a necessity for postpartum moms.

Baby Carrier

There are so many variations on baby carriers. You can strap into one or wrap yourself in beautiful cloth. Either way, a carrier keeps your baby close to you and frees up your hands to get stuff done. Baby carriers come in handy when traveling, going for walks or hikes, or even around the house. They can also be a fantastic way to get your little one to sleep!

Silicone Breast Pump

For those of you who are breastfeeding, a silicone vacuum breast pump can help you save milk that you didn’t even know you were losing. These pumps use a little suction to set up a seal and save the milk that lets down from your opposite breast when you are feeding. All that liquid gold is precious and good to the last drop! Save that milk for your baby, rather than spraying his or her belly while feeding on the other side.
