So like you probably, I am always looking for new books to read or podcasts to listen to that are uplifting or make me feel like I am not alone. Join me each month as I share: what I’m reading, what my nugget is reading, what I am reading with my husband, and what I am listening to. Sometimes they will be parenting related, sometimes they will just be funny, but always it is from one mom to another. I would also love any recommendations!
What I Am Reading: Maxed Out: American Moms on the Brink
Recently I have found myself really “maxed out”. Between work and family and social life and everything in between, I am sometimes at my end and then can’t shut off my mind to sleep before I do it all over again. This book comes from one woman’s place of crying in the Target aisle while getting diapers, and I could totally relate (it wasn’t crying on the diaper aisle but in the middle of Starbucks when I couldn’t even order the drink I wanted). I am about 3/4s of the way done with this book and what I have enjoyed is that I am not alone. I need a group of moms and non-moms around me to remind me that I have a community. To set time aside for me is not selfish but necessary for my health. I highly recommend for all the moms out there that are “yes” people and struggle to say “yes” to self-care!
What My Kid is Reading: Sensory Books
Our little bub, who is almost 10 months old, is in to all kinds of textures, colors, and noises. We are steering away from all things technology and are in love with the “Never Touch a…” series. His favorite is Never Touch a Dinosaur. I believe wholeheartedly, as a literacy teacher, that reading to and with our kids is such an important role as parents. So, back to these books, they are so fun with a different texture on every page. My husband and I have it memorized at this point, but our little man gets just as excited each time we read. It is also how we were able to sneak out with a babysitter the other night.
What We are Reading as a Couple: The 5 Love Languages
This is something I have read on my own back in my single days, but my husband and I are reading it again. Something we have realized, having an infant, is that we sometimes set aside time for our little man but to be healthy parents we have to focus on us as well. So we are reading the book, discussing how both give and receive love, and then practicing a new way to show love to one another each week. I have learned more about him in the past couple of weeks than I have in quite a while! Well worth it!
What I am Listening To: Moms in the Middle Podcast
I have an hour commute to work and have been using this time to listen to a variety of podcasts. Especially in the mornings, music is a bit too much, but with podcasts, I feel like I am on a car ride with “friends”. I have been listening to the Moms in the Middle podcast for quite a while, but what I love about them is their realness and tackling difficult subjects (but in a humorous way). They promote themselves for every mother, aunt, guardian, even if you don’t have kids, etc. Their realness drew me in but their sarcasm had me staying!
