I was always told from day one to create a routine with your child and stick.to.it.
After we brought home our son from the hospital, in my sleep-deprived haze, I deemed that advice to be silly. Boy was I wrong. I waved that white flag and admitted defeat against a one-week-old baby. I knew we both needed some sort of routine if I was going to keep my sanity. Of course, over the years, the structure has changed accordingly, but the routine that works for us and our household remains the same.
Lately, though, I’ve come to notice that sometimes our routine gets a bit boring so I decided to come up with ways to shake things up and have some fun at the same time.
Here are a few routine shakes ups that we love:
1. A Picnic Dinner
This is something I like to do when I know my husband won’t be home for dinner. It’s a little something special I can share with my son. This isn’t a picnic in the traditional sense; our version is eating dinner on the couch in the living room, with good old-fashioned TV trays. After those particularly long days, it’s a fun way to kick back and unwind. We usually watch a favorite cartoon of his, or if it’s the weekend, a short movie.
2. ‘Yes Day’
This is inspired by the book ‘Yes Day!’ by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. You pick one special day, or several if you’re brave, where you answer “yes” to all of your kids’ requests. Jennifer Garner just posted a hilarious selfie after a ‘Yes Day’ with her kids. Fair warning: you will be exhausted.
3. Dessert First!
Every once in a while, after I pick up my son, we stop to get ice cream before we go home for dinner. Just a little guilty treat occasionally can make all the difference.
4. Pajama Day
Admittedly, this is one of my favorites. On a rainy, yucky day, why worry about getting dressed? You’re probably not going to go anywhere anyways. We end up staying in our pajamas all day and bonus, you’re a step ahead when it comes to bedtime!
5. Slumber Party
This actually happened by accident but turned out to be so much fun! We bought a new blowup mattress for camping and decided to have a slumber party in the living room. Complete with snacks and a movie, we stayed up late and slept in the next morning.
Just by doing a little something different to our everyday routine, you end up making the best memories! We all have long weeks and can get so wrapped up in our lives, so it’s fun to be able to shake things up when it’s least expected.
