1. Schedule A Photographer

If you haven’t already yet, choose and book your photographer.

2. Location

Work with your photographer to choose the best location for your family. Most photographers will have great suggestions for different types of locations.

3. Wardrobe Selection

Now that you have your photographer and a date scheduled, it’s time to choose your wardrobe. I suggest choosing mom’s outfit first, and then coordinate the rest of the family. Give your outfits a good test run. Make sure everyone is comfortable and everything fits perfectly, including shoes. You don’t want any surprises on the day of your photo session.  When selecting your wardrobe, make sure to consider how you plan to use the photos. If you are planning on creating framed wall art or canvases, you should consider that when choosing colors for your session.

4. Plan Ahead

The day of your family portrait will go smoothly if you plan ahead. Plan to arrive early so that you’re not stressing about time. Pack water and snacks for everyone. Even your hubby will be much more agreeable if he’s not starving. Make sure the snacks are not messy and will not stain clothing or faces. (lollipops, popsicles, chocolate, etc.) Kids generally will do better without a ton of sugar on picture day. Make sure everyone is well rested. Schedule the session after nap if possible or morning if that is a better time for your family.   Bring chapstick, baby wipes (to clean those hands and faces), and a brush or comb for last minute hair touch-ups.

5. Bring the Love!

Finally, on the day of your session, bring the love. Try not to stress if the kids aren’t being “perfect” for the photographer. I usually like to let the kids be themselves for a bit. They are more likely to join in for the group family pictures if they are allowed have a few moments to warm up to the photographer. Let them be silly. If you are relaxed, it will show in the pictures.   Have fun. You might just make some great memories to go with your new fall family portraits.
