Another Dose of Caring and Sharing: Book and Podcast Recommendations from One Mom to Another

Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes. However, since our little nugget has come along, it has been harder and harder to find intentional time to read or even what to read. Last month I shared with you my current reads and what I am listening to, and here are my newest recommendations. I hope you enjoy and I would also love any recommendations from you as well!

What I Am Reading: Where the Crawdads Sing

This month, I am sharing with you one of my fiction finds that I am loving. I first saw the recommendation on Reese Witherspoon’s book club list, plus it is set in North Carolina. I gave it a chance and loved it. There will even be a movie coming out based on the novel (I am thinking Mom’s Night Out at the Movies!) The main character has lived alone in the marshes and sets out to connect with the real world. I highly recommend this debut novel by Delia Owens to anyone that loves a good page turner with great details!

What My Kid is Reading: My Heart

I am always on the hunt for books that I can use to reinforce strong character traits. This beautifully illustrated children’s book teaches and fosters kindness and empathy. It is geared towards children, but the life lessons connect with “kids” of all ages. I even read it the other day to my middle school students. Corinna Luyken masterfully opens the door to conversations about how to be a generous, compassionate person (which is such a stark contrast to what our kids are being taught elsewhere.) Pick it up today – you won’t regret it!

What We are Reading as a Couple: Fail Until You Don’t

My husband and I leave the house at different times in the morning, but both listen to the same morning show on our commutes: The Bobby Bones Show. For Christmas, I bought him Bone’s memoir and we both decided to read and discuss. You see both of us struggle with the tragic flaw of perfectionism. Bones, using his humor, helps us have open conversations about our struggles and how we can best support one another in overcoming our Kryptonite. I suggest finding a book to read together, spark discussion, and learn to encourage each other in our own weaknesses. Two thumbs up!

What I am Listening To: Coffee + Crumbs Podcast

I recently found this podcast, based on a suggestion, and it has been a great and easy listen. The series is currently in Season 4, so there is quite a bit of listening to add into car drives, cleaning the house, leisurely walks, etc. The podcast is simply stories from one to mother to another, in hopes of encouraging each other in the difficulties of motherhood. From their website, the creator’s mission has been, “It is the mission of Coffee + Crumbs to support mothers around the world through the power of shared experiences, artful storytelling, and creative community. At the core of this space, we want mothers to feel safe, known, encouraged and loved.” I love it and usually walk away from each episode breathing a sigh of relief and saying, “I am not alone. I got this!”

Stay tuned for next month to hear more about what I am reading and listening to, and be sure to share your recommendations in the comments below!
