October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are thrilled to be partnering with Ink to the People to offer our readers in the Triangle an opportunity to join us and more than a dozen City Moms Blog Sister Sites across the country in raising funds for Look Good Feel Better, an organization that teaches beauty techniques to people with cancer to help them manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. The program includes lessons on skin and nail care, cosmetic techniques, and wigs and turbans, helping people with cancer to find some normalcy in a life that has ceased to be normal.

The program is open to all women with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or other forms of treatment.

Thousands of volunteer beauty professionals support Look Good Feel Better. All are trained and certified by the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the Professional Beauty Association at local, statewide, and national workshops. Other volunteer health care professionals and individuals also give their time to the program.

Jackie
, a Contributor for our sister site MKE Moms Blog, and a breast cancer survivor, shared with us what Look Good Feel Better meant to her:
Nothing prepares you for losing your hair – ALL your hair. At the same time, your skin becomes incredibly dry and sensitive. You’re pale. Your nails are peeling and breaking so easily. And you’re tired. So freaking tired. Exhausted, you finally understand that term. Not to mention you have two different shaped boobs now (or no boobs post-surgery). Maybe your underarm skin is literally peeling off from the burns of radiation, and you can’t wear deodorant anymore. No matter how skilled you are at the smoky eye or the latest blow-out style, cancer makes all that moot. Looking “normal” when you have cancer means DRAWING on eyebrows, figuring out what eyelash glue won’t literally rip your lid skin off, and starting reading labels on nail polishes to find the least drying. Everything you used before isn’t the right color now with your pale skin, or it’s too dry, or it takes too long (and darnit, you’re tired). Hairstyling is another story – whether you opt to shave it off or let it fall out from the chemicals, how do you feel beautiful now? How do you feel like a WOMAN, not a cancer patient? Look Good Feel Better provides basic lessons to women undergoing cancer treatments. From tying scarves, finding a “cranial prosthetic” (aka wig), applying makeup (and brands that work), dressing for your new body, the organization’s workshops help women feel their best, so they can focus on kicking the crap out of cancer.
